How Do I Feed My Picky Pup?

Handling a picky pup can be frustrating, but with patience and consistency, most dogs can learn to enjoy a complete and balanced diet.

First (and always!), rule out any underlying medical issues by visiting your veterinarian.  Pickiness can be caused by different diseases and symptoms such as dental pain, gastrointestinal discomfort and disease, food sensitivities, etc. If medical concerns are present, your vet may prescribe appetite stimulants and/or anti-nausea medications to support more consistent eating while other treatments and recommendations are pending.

Once health issues are addressed or ruled out, establish a regimented feeding routine: offer a measured portion of food at set times, leave it down for 15–20 minutes, and remove it if uneaten. Avoid constantly switching foods or offering too many treats, as this can often reinforce selective eating habits.

To enhance the appeal of meals, consider adding dog-safe toppers (such as a small amount of plain yogurt, low-fat sour cream, or a sprinkle of nutritional yeast) which adds flavor and aroma. Lightly warming the food to ~ 100 degrees F, or mixing in a spoonful of soft food or low-sodium broth can also help. Artie was designed to do just that by steaming and hydrating your pup's meal to the perfect serving temperature and creating a nutritious bone broth that entices them to eat.

For mental stimulation, try using puzzle feeders or slow-feeder bowls to turn mealtime into an engaging activity. Consistency and a positive mealtime environment, along with strategic enhancements, can help even the pickiest pup learn to eat more willingly and nutritiously.
